Faulty Power Point Leads to Significant Campus Fire

A campus fire occurred at a Member University on 28 May. Following the activation of the (thermal) fire detection alarm, two volunteer fire brigades attended the rural campus and found that smoke had infiltrated much of the affected building. The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes.

Smoke and heat damage were sustained to the building and its contents. The building contained a significant piece of the University’s research infrastructure. Whilst the principal component of this equipment (a large tank of water) was not significantly damaged, much peripheral equipment was damaged and it is anticipated that a business interruption claim will be lodged in respect of lost research earnings.
