Member FAQ’s

Regulation and Governance

Unimutual is a Discretionary Mutual, not an insurer. Whereas insurers are regulated by APRA, Discretionary Mutual’s are regulated by ASIC (the Australian Securities and Investments Commission) as a financial services provider of miscellaneous mutual risk products. Unimutual holds an Australian Financial Services Licence for the provision of these products.

As a Discretionary Mutual, Unimutual does not have a credit rating. Our Australian Financial Services Licence requires that adjusted assets must exceed adjusted liabilities at all times. Further, we ensure the financial stability of the Mutual by placing a comprehensive and robust reinsurance program that protects against large losses and an aggregation of smaller losses. Our minimum counterparty credit rating requirement is Standard and Poors A- (or AM Best / Moody’s equivalent).

Here is a standard response to this common question:

“Unimutual is an Australian Financial Services (AFS) licensee with authorisation to issue miscellaneous mutual risk products. It is a discretionary mutual owned by its Members and regulated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). As an AFS licensee, Unimutual is subject to the Corporations Act 2001 and the other relevant financial services laws.”

The information provided by Unimutual solely relates to the operation of the Protections offered in context of the contractual information provided. The information does not in any way constitute legal advice and the Member should always seek legal advice if required.
