New Unimutual Board Member – Professor Deborah Hodgson

We are delighted to welcome Professor Deborah Hodgson to the Unimutual board as a non-executive Member Director.

Professor Hodgson is Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, and Director of the Laboratory of Neuroimmunology at the University of Newcastle, and brings many years of experience in research and universities, as well as extensive experience serving on various boards and committees including Universities Australia Executive Women (UAEW) Group, Headstart, Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment, AMPED, and Psychoneuroimmunology Research Society (PNIRS). She is also the lead executive champion for the university’s participation in the Science Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) pilot of Athena Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN).

Professor Hodgson replaces Judy Raper, who has left the University sector.

Within her University, Professor Hodgson has been instrumental in improving research opportunities at the University of Newcastle and in particular is committed to supporting the development of emerging research leaders and ensuring that provision is made to support early career researchers.

She also has an active laboratory dedicated to understanding the dynamic interactions between the brain and the immune system. She is working towards providing a perinatal etiology for chronic pain, anxiety, schizophrenia, and irritable bowel syndrome – all of which appear to have common links to infection in early life. The lab is also focusing on the possible epigenetic pathways that pass these predispositions down generation to generation.

We look forward to Professor Hodgson’s contribution to the Board and the Membership.
